navigation skills

Learn the Fundamental Skills of Navigation.

Learn the basic skills of navigation. Gain the confidence and experience needed to head out for a day of hill walking. This one day course will help you learn the fundamental skills of navigation, map setting, measuring distance, contours and how to keep track of where you are. You will focus on using the 1:25,000 Ordnance Survey map, it can be combined with the Navigation Improver course to provide you with the skills and confidence needed to head out independently and not rely on others.

Is this for me?

Yes. If you have little or no experience, this course is for you. You just need to be fit enough for a day of walking.

What do I need?

You will need to bring suitable clothing to cope with the weather: waterproofs, warm clothes, hat and gloves. Enough food and drink for the day, compass, a small rucksack, notebook and pen. We will provide the maps, and compasses for those folk that need one.

Where do we go?

We will generally meet in Langdale valley, at the National Trust(NT) car park. This will be subject to local weather conditions, we will head to wherever is best on the day and agree this with you beforehand.
